UPDATE: At first, the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) would solely validate our report without providing any specifics. On Monday, they returned to Casino.org with more comprehensive responses to our inquiries.
"The Bellagio Room Service Kitchen and Mangia Employee Dining Room share the same kitchen and all permits associated with these two facilities were closed on September 19, under an Imminent Health Hazard of sewage/liquid waste backing up out of the floor drains,” an SNHD rep explained in an email to Casino.org.
As we first announced, both Bellagio establishments were re-evaluated and resumed operations the following day.
We inquired why a facility can be shut down with only five demerits and then reopened later even after receiving eight demerits?
SNHD clarified that additionally ...
“The facility was closed based on the nature of the violation and not demerits,” they responded. “In this case, the facility was closed under an Imminent Health Hazard of sewage/liquid waste backing up out of the floor drains, which warrants an immediate closure.”
“There is, in some cases, a relationship with demerits and closures,” SNHD continued. “SNHD closes facilities for two main reasons: 1) If an inspection results in 41 demerits or more, or 2) if we observe the facility operating under an Imminent Health Hazard, in which case we close the facility regardless of the number of demerits received in the inspection.”
MGM Resorts has yet to reply to Casino.org's original inquiry.
PREVIOUSLY: The Bellagio is likely the most sophisticated dining location on the Las Vegas Strip. However, that reputation will not aid it in clearing a standard health inspection.
On September 19, the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) shut down a room service kitchen at the MGM Resorts location. As stated on SNHD's website, the kitchen received five demerits for infractions such as “sewage or liquid waste not being disposed of properly.”
According to SNHD, the same facility was closed on March 5 for accumulating eight demerits.
Following the regular inspection at Bellagio on September 19, SNHD also shut down a fry/grill station at Mangia, the employee dining area of Bellagio. The station was cited with five demerits for the identical infractions.
The SNHD website states that one day later, both facilities were inspected again by SNHD. It assigned an A grade to each, with the room service kitchen getting eight demerits and the employee fry station three. All related permits were reinstated.
Casino.org reached out to MGM Resorts via email for a response but did not get one. If one is obtained, we will revise this story.
