The Mega Millions jackpot has entered the list of the 10 highest prizes in the game.

The Mega Millions drawing will take place at 11 p.m. on Tuesday night. ET from the Georgia Lottery's drawing studio in Atlanta features a promoted jackpot of $575 million. That positions No. 9 on the Mega Millions highest jackpots list.

The annuitized jackpot from August 27 includes a one-time cash choice of approximately $285.5 million. Both awards are subject to federal, and potentially, state taxes.

Mega Millions has had 23 straight drawings without a ticket that matches the five white balls and the gold Mega Ball. That isn't particularly shocking, since the chances of each ticket winning the jackpot remain a bleak one in over 302.5 million.

Nonetheless, the chances of winning a jackpot increase marginally as additional tickets are purchased since more potential number combinations of the 302,575,350 distinct sequences are represented.

In the August 23 drawing of Mega Millions, two tickets correctly matched all five white balls, winning $1 million prizes. One of the tickets bought the extra $1 Megaplier, which increased the winnings to $3 million after the Megaplier came up as 3x.

Leisurely Year

Out of the countless Mega Millions tickets sold this year, just two have successfully matched the six winning numbers drawn.

On March 26, a ticket purchased in New Jersey matched the five white balls along with the gold Mega Ball to win a jackpot of $1.128 billion. That ticket has yet to be used. Lottery participants in New Jersey have until a year to claim their winnings.

On June 4, a ticket purchased in Illinois won an annuitized jackpot totaling $552 million — the 10th largest Mega Millions payout in the game's history.

Mega Millions was introduced in 1996 under the name The Big Game. It changed its name to The Big Game Mega Millions before adopting its present identity in 2003.

Due to Mega Millions having longer jackpot odds compared to Powerball’s odds of roughly one in 292.2 million, Mega Millions has seen an increase in jackpots exceeding $1 billion. Starting in 2018, Mega Millions has generated six jackpots exceeding $1 billion.

Powerball has generated five pre-tax jackpots of 10 digits, among them the biggest ever in the country, a $2.04 billion prize claimed by a California player in 2022.

Mega Millions is played across 45 states, along with Washington, DC, and the US Virgin Islands. Tickets are priced at $2, and the majority of participating jurisdictions offer an optional $1 Megaplier add-on, which enables winning tickets to increase their nonjackpot prizes.

Texas on Alert

In addition to promoting its $575 million jackpot for Tuesday night's drawing, Mega Millions officials are advising players in Texas to review their past plays. A $1 million winning ticket from the March 19 drawing is nearing its expiration date of Sunday, September 15.

Individuals who bought a Mega Millions ticket at the All-Season Food convenience store in Houston at 3411 Antoine Drive are advised to check their ticket stubs. The ticket involved matched all five white balls (24-46-49-62-66) but did not hit the gold Mega Ball of 7 to win Mega Millions’ second-highest prize of $1 million.

The fortunate player who bought the ticket didn’t choose the $1 Megaplier, which could have increased the prize to $2 million.
